ALEX MATTSSON | FALL / WINTER 2012
Gothenburg born Alex Mattsson moved to England in 2004 to study menswear. The “new kid on the block” is being described as a member of the fresh breed of menswear designers due to his experimental techniques and ideas that push the boundaries of the current London men’s fashion scene.
Alex Mattsson’s Fall / Winter 2012 collection was inspired by the concept of sci-fi steampunk: an alternative retro-future where technology has taken a different path than our present reality, and the sight of futuristic motorcycles and cyborgs are an everyday occurrence.
This influence can clearly be seen in the aesthetics and materials of the collection, with leather biker jackets, clean block cuts and bright pops of oranges and reds layered upon dark palettes. The padded shoulders and collar rolls also give a futuristic vibe, and small details such as collar tips and jacket vents add to the new technology look.
The most iconic item of Alex Mattsson’s Fall / Winter 2012 collection, titled Analogue Visions, is his playful cartoon crown. This contrasts with an edgy, bright orange and black leather biker jacket and lace up boots which portray an almost Blade Runner era appearance.
Although strong lines are dominant within the collection the addition of a long lava print shirt breaks the parallel lines and softens the look. This is only Alex Mattsson’s third collection and he is set to become an intriguingly iconic British designer – watch out.
