BAND OF OUTSIDERS | RESORT 2013
Band of Outsiders designer, Scott Sternberg is often cited as a leader for Californian design. But it seems that the L.A-based designer may be more interested by what’s in his living room that his wardrobe. For his Band of Outsiders Resort 2013 collection is based on the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s California interiors show, which followed the progression of mid-century modern Californian home design from 1930 to 1965.
The collection’s staple pieces, a bandage wrap skirt worked in a chunky hessian and a pleather A-line peacoat paid homage to Scandinavian furniture upholstery, whilst playing on the seafaring associations that go hand-in-hand with Resort collections.
A two-piece leather-finish blazer and skirt ensemble was a definite nod to mid-century interior design. Band of Outsiders Resort 2013 was brimming with nautical elements, which could be found in the sailboat print that embellished a creamy wool sweater and soft silk blouse.
Stripes and geometrical patterns flowed throughout the Resort 2013 line. However, some of the most striking pieces were largely simple and minimalistic; a Venetian blue, loose-fitted jumpsuit with a bold red zipper came together with a white woollen jacket and lace-up sandals and a floor-length black gown with a plunging neckline was topped off with a cream lapelled cape.
Elsewhere popping yellows sat alongside royal blue and burnt orange, and preppy collard shirts were tucked into botanical print shorts and finished with a military-style coat with contrasting sleeves. A fisherman-style poncho overlaid a poppy T-shirt dress and a sailboat print blouses was teamed up with a black and lilac leather skirt that fell just above the knee.
Overall Band of Outsiders Resort 2013 blended a sunny sense of seafaring with a slick urban vibe, and Sternberg took charge of the ultra-easy essence of Californian style.
