Makin Jan Ma intertwines mediums, by creating scripts and films for the characters he designs for he is blurring the line between film and fashion. As a graphics graduate, the collection contained his signature mix of prints and quirky cuts in a space age setting.

The focus of Makin’s SS 11 collection is Guts, who he describes as a sensitive male concerned with love. Navy and black provide the backbone of the galactic collection with flashes of red. An abstract print on shirts, short suits, t-shirts and trousers, turns out on closer inspection to be a magnified moon print, hence the collection was dubbed ‘Moon walking to your heart.’

There’s a sci-fi element to the clean, all-white looks. Shirts with an iridescent shine add to the futuristic fabrics. Although in the main a simplistic collection, diamond seaming on otherwise traditional shirts adds interest and there were a selection of more complex looks.

Sheer fabrics were the crux of the layering, as were flashes of red jutting out from under a t-shirt and the lining of a suit. Baggy shorts over skin-tight jeans continued Makin’s play with oversized fit. Sheer trousers and a sheer skirt were some of the less wearable pieces but demonstrated his desire to keep pushing forward the boundaries of men’s fashion.
