SKINGRAFT | FALL / WINTER 2012
Despite the unflattering images conjured up by its name, Skingraft has managed to build a steady celebrity following within the music industry, with supporters including Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott. Skingraft was launched in 2005 by designer Jonny Cota, although initially focussing solely on fashion for the art and performance world, today they also create ready-to-wear collections for the runway.
With inspiration for menswear deriving from the image of Japanese Gothic hip-hop, the collection presented for Fall / Winter 2012 circled around edgy urban/street wear. Not surprisingly for the season, black, greys and browns echoed on the catwalk.
The casual wardrobe was represented through leather jackets, hooded sweatshirts and fitted tops, with skinny pants making a repeat appearance throughout the show. Evening-wear was symbolized by the use of the smart blazer and tailored shirt.
The infused headgear of skull and baseball caps combined with the varied outfits that were on offer added a dynamic twist. Cota successfully mixed different textures to produce a palette that was versatile, functional and contemporary.
A leather skull-cap paired with an elongated top, signature skinny trousers and a zipped hooded cape was a show highlight. Arousing an image of a crusader ready to conquer the world, appealing to say the least!
