YUIMA NAKAZATO

Tokyo designer Yuima Nakazato has quickly found himself thrown into the frenzied world of high fashion.

After receiving his MA in fashion design from the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the designer set to work on creating his own line. His first collection debuted in Paris in March 2009 and virtually overnight Nakazato began collecting awards and accolades. He is the recipient of the Coccodrillo award for shoes, International Talent Support Vertice Award including the Innovation award from Ann Demeulemeester’s company, BVBA“32”, an award the designer is particular proud of, citing Demeulemeester as an inspiration.

Nakazato grew up in Tokyo with a strong interest in fashion, using the medium as a form of self-expression. After seeing an article in a regional newspaper on the graduate show at Antwerp, Nakazato picked up and moved to Belgium at the age of 17. His graduate collection, Wooden Dimension, featured futuristic looks heavy in both symmetry and dramatic folding and was shopped around Europe after graduation.

Now back in Tokyo and showing in Paris (the designer says he can’t resist the energy behind the city of lights), Nakazato is focusing on the accessories as part of his A/W 2010 collection. Each look takes fashion-as-art to an entirely new level, including platforms reminiscent of McQueen and Nina Ricci, and dramaticly flared pants in a variety of fabrics—a reminder that the style of 70’s Japanese outsiders served as inspiration. “Fusion was a keyword for the collection. For example, organic elements and artificial elements, body and metal, women and men, human and animal… Leather represents an extension of the human body, and metal represents elements of the artificial,” says Nakazato. A combination of metal and mohair are also found throughout the collection, known as what Nakazato calls “metal knit”.

Although not currently available in the UK, Yuima Nakazato has outposts in Tokyo and Belgium.
